Understanding the MCAT Structure
The MCAT is 7.5 hours long and contains four sections: Chemical and Physical Foundations of Biological Systems (Chem/Phys), Critical Analysis and Reasoning Skills (CARS), Biological and Biochemical Foundations of Living Systems (Bio/Biochem), and Psychological, Social, and Biological Foundations of Behavior (Psych/Soc). Building Your Study Schedule
Phase 1: Content review (Weeks 1–8)
Work through content section by section. Khan Academy's free MCAT prep covers all tested content and is the most cost-effective starting point. Supplement with Kaplan or Princeton Review books for the subjects where you feel weakest. Biology and biochemistry should get the most time — they make up about 65% of the science questions.
Phase 2: Passage-based practice (Weeks 9–14)
The MCAT tests content in the context of passages — including science passages that present experiments, data, and unfamiliar scenarios. Start UWorld MCAT, Blueprint MCAT, or Altius practice passages. Do 2–3 passages per science section daily plus a full CARS section.
Phase 3: Full-length exams (Weeks 15–18)
Take one full-length per week, then spend 2–3 days reviewing every wrong answer in depth. The AAMC practice exams (Scored Sample + 4 Full Lengths) are the most predictive. Save at least 2 AAMC full lengths for your final month.
Section-by-Section Tips
Chem/Phys (59 questions, 95 min)
- General chemistry and physics make up ~50% — prioritize these if weak
- Biochemistry appears heavily — know enzyme kinetics, thermodynamics, and reaction mechanisms
- Practice reading graphs and interpreting experimental data — this appears in nearly every passage
CARS (53 questions, 90 min)
- No science background required — pure reasoning and reading comprehension
- Practice daily for 8+ weeks — CARS skill improves slowly and cannot be crammed
- Read philosophy, history, and social science texts to build comfort with dense academic writing
Bio/Biochem (59 questions, 95 min)
- Highest content load of any section — prioritize it early
- Genetics, evolution, metabolism (glycolysis, Krebs, oxidative phosphorylation), and molecular biology are high yield
- Laboratory techniques (gel electrophoresis, PCR, ELISA) appear frequently
Psych/Soc (59 questions, 95 min)
- Most approachable section for most students — do not neglect it
- Sociology terms and social determinants of health are heavily tested
- Know all major psychological theories and their researchers
